Bilingual Legal Transcribers – U.S. Citizen with Public Trust or Higher Clearance (Remote)
A woman-owned small business in Northern VA is seeking professional bilingual Transcribers who possess native-level English and advanced foreign language skills (tested at level 3+ ILR proficiency rating in reading/writing/listening/speaking) in English and the following languages:
Spanish
Arabic
Chinese
Source files may be provided in a variety of formats, including audio or video files, compact discs, etc. Content may vary widely from highly complex, technical, and specialized information, to very informal, street language and textspeak, informal communications using coded language, and law enforcement sensitive information.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Must be a US Citizen and possess an active Public Trust or higher security clearance.
2. Bachelor’s degree in linguistics, translation, or related field; transcription certificate/formal training a plus.
3. At least three years of experience performing professional foreign language transcriptions.
4. Extensive English and foreign language vocabulary used in formal, legal, diplomatic, consultative, and casual modes of communication. in various contexts, including colloquial slang, idiosyncratic slang, and regionalisms.
5. Knowledge of specialized vocabulary (and terminology) in both English and the foreign language.
6. Preserve the tone and register of transcribed material (source audio or multimedia content).
7. Abide by the relevant governmental code of linguist ethics.
8. Adept in using transcription equipment and understanding of multimedia file formats.
9. Excellent word processing and formatting skills; highly proficient in MS Office suite, especially MS Word.
Additional Required Skills:
1. Type quickly and accurately to keep up with the recording and produce complete and accurate transcripts.
2. Excellent focus and attention to detail.
3. Time management skills.
4. Ability to research and determine the exact words spoken (if not discernable) in the context of recorded speech.
5. Ability to listen, understand, and type simultaneously.
6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
