The Optum Whole Health Solutions (WHS) Director of Oncology Research & Development will provide innovative clinical and scientific support to drive ongoing transformation of cancer care at Optum and its partner health plans. This role will develop and implement actionable solutions to ensure our members receive high quality, evidence-based and cost-effective care. The position will autonomously lead research and development around new opportunities in the oncology space in close partnership with product owners and clinical stakeholders. This ranges from early innovation to delivery of precision oncology, new product concepts and existing product enhancements. The role will work both independently and collaboratively on actionable strategies with a focus on advancing precision medicine integration into Optum’s existing and emerging products, applying a strategic mindset, in addition to research and analytics best practices, business acumen, and working knowledge of the precision medicine space.
The Director of Oncology Research & Development will be key to defining the innovation agenda and advancing ideas from initial concept through integration with Optum’s existing in market offerings. This person will serve as a scientific lead working in partnership with clinical and product stakeholders.

Primary Responsibilities:

Support an overall oncology strategy to help keep Optum a leader in oncology products and programs and position us for the future in partnership with the Product team

Ensure products are designed with integrity and sound research

Assist with research and analysis highlighting the value of Optum oncology products and services

As part of research and development process for oncology product suite, structure clinical studies or pilots to measure impact and value

Drive innovation to enhance and expand Optum’s oncology product suite, sourcing and cultivating ideas from concept to implementation

Maintain a deep understanding of the scientific and clinical landscape in the precision oncology space, serving as a subject matter expert across Whole Health Solutions

Leverage scientific, technical, and industry expertise in vendor analysis and selection

Required Qualifications:

10+ years of experience in healthcare industry, preferably within precision medicine and oncology

5+ years of hands-on experience in precision medicine, oncology, or bioinformatics, including direct involvement in clinical research, data analysis, or implementation of personalized treatment strategies

Experience supporting early-stage product development from initial ideation through pilot creation through program design

General understanding of oncology market trends and programs relating to value-based care, case management and decision support

Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating flexibility and an ability to manage through ambiguity

Demonstrated ability to apply clinical concepts to product development

Proven exceptional analytical skills and problem-solving abilities

Proven exceptional ability to deliver results through collaborating and influencing across business segments and geographies

Preferred Qualification:

Oncology or bioinformatics experience

The salary range for this role is $124,500 to $239,400 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
