This Legislative and Budget Intern position works in the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Executive Director’s Office to assist the Chief Financial Officer, Director of Legislative Affairs, and the Budget Director. The position assists on tracking legislation, monitoring legislative committees, supporting logistics for stakeholder engagement, developing talking points, and tracking reporting requirements. The position will learn about the State legislative and budget process. Opportunities to job shadow DNR employees and to attend board meetings, legislative hearings, and site visits will be provided.
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:
Legislation Tracking & Monitoring:
Track legislation that has policy and/or fiscal impacts for Department of Natural Resources;
Monitor and attend legislative committees, documenting committee discussion and actions on bills of interest to the Department Policy Research & Communications Support:
Conduct policy research on a wide variety of natural resources issues, including performing research and helping to write reports, briefings and studies on policy issues for both internal and external distribution;
Develop issue briefs, talking points, fact sheets, and other communications regarding budget and legislative items/issues;
Support the Department’s SMART Act hearing presentation development
Gather information in response to legislator and/or legislative staff questions Logistics – Administrative Support for Meetings & Stakeholder Engagement:
Support Department’s stakeholder engagement for legislative issues, including tracking stakeholder requests and comments;
Help manage logistics for testimony, including preparing draft scripts for staff Funding & Budget Tracking & Other Duties:
Assist with reconciliation of legislative funding decisions and program budgets;
Support reporting requirements for the Department’s Wildly Important Goals
Other special projects as assigned.
Experience Only:
Currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university seeking an Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or Ph.D. degree OR have completed at least one semester of community college, college or university.
OR
Education and Experience:
At least one year of experience in managing meeting logistics, administrative duties such as keeping spreadsheets and taking meeting minutes, writing clear communications or talking points for public audiences, or other experience closely related to the job duties.
Required Competencies:
Experience using Google Suite, Zoom, and Microsoft Suite
Attention to detail for logistics and planning purposes
Analytical and critical thinking
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, and accuracy of written content
Demonstrated ability to gather, research and compile information
Experience managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines
Basic knowledge of natural resources issues in Colorado
Basic knowledge of state government and legislative processes
Familiarity with Google spreadsheets or Excel spreadsheets (data management)
Work Arrangements:
This is a Remote/Hybrid position – Work can be performed from a home office, however the selected candidate will report to the office at 1313 Sherman Street – Denver, CO two to three times per week as well as other locations throughout the State for meetings, trainings and projects as directed by the supervisor. A free RTD Eco Pass is provided.
