VACANCY
The WildCAT Botswana Trust is seeking a skilled and dedicated GIS Technician to join their team for human-wildlife coexistence projects in the Chobe District.
Position Summary:
Location: Kasane, Chobe District.
Temporary position: Initial 6-month contract, with possibility of extension based on outcomes.
Role Context:
The Chobe District dedicates nearly three-quarters of its land to wildlife protection, resulting in potential land use conflicts, especially human-wildlife conflict.
WildCAT, in partnership with local authorities, is delivering the Land Use Conflict Identification System (LUCIS) to help planners make informed land use decisions that balance community and stakeholder priorities.
The GIS Technician will report to the Coexistence Coordinator and work with the Stakeholder Liaison Officer and government partners.
Main responsibilities include delivering LUCIS modelling and analysis, interpreting results for planners and the community, and providing training and mentorship in LUCIS and land use modelling.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Compile, update, and verify geographic information from various sources for LUCIS modelling.
Conduct LUCIS modelling using spatial, remote-sensing, and community-derived datasets.
Integrate and interpret LUCIS outputs with land use and management plans.
Design and deliver basic GIS training, collaborating with external partners.
Prepare spatial data, including maps for coexistence strategies, community rangeland, and livestock initiatives.
Requirements:
Full-time, temporary (with hope of extension) role based in Kasane, Chobe District.
Master’s degree in GIS or related field.
Minimum 2 years’ experience delivering GIS-based outputs and models.
LUCIS modelling experience strongly preferred.
Proficiency in QGIS, Python, R; ArcGIS and Google Earth Pro are advantages.
Driving licence required; remote field work experience is an advantage.
Fluent in English and Setswana (spoken and written).
Experience in designing and delivering basic training to stakeholders.
Good organisation, professionalism, and communication skills.
